Betheljahr A - Z - Age
- Young adults between 17 and 27 can participate in the Betheljahr.
- Employer
- Because of the specific characteristic of the responsible body, employer´s duties and responsibilities are delegated to the department “Freiwilligenagentur und Zivildienst Bethel”
- Working hours
- Working hours adapt to the requirements of the department. Shift work is common but no night shift are done. Currently the standard weekly hours of 38,5 hours apply.
- Medical certificate
- A medical certificate for the planned functions is required. The check-up can be done by your family doctor or by the company medical office of Bethel.
- Obligatory supervision
- Obligatory supervision for minors is not unambiguous legally clarified. A bulletin in German about this matter can be found

- Consultation
- Betheljahr participants will be supervised and supported in private and occupational questions by the consultants of the volunteer agency.
- Certificate
- A certification of participation in the Betheljahr will be issued at any time. (e.g. For applications)
- Application
- The application terms can be found here. Application documents will be checked after receipt. If there are appropriate vacancies an interview will be arranged. This usually splits up into a group interview and an one-on-one interview. During the one-on-one interview the decision to fill a vacancy is made.
- Departments

- Food
- Betheljahr participants receive a general amount for board. They can get all meals in the staff canteen with a staff discount.
- Travel expenses
- Travel expenses during the application procedure will be refunded. Applicants can find a form
here. Additional travel expenses during the seminars will also be refunded, e.g. if the accommodation is in Eckardsheim or the Betheljahr position is in Dortmund, Gevelsberg or Breckerfeld.
- Salary
- The pocket money amounts to 190 € and 210 € for board get paid per month. Accommodation is for free, if no accommodation is required, 204 € are paid for lodging.
- Supervised placement
- German students who left grammar school after the 12th year may have the voluntary social year accredited as a supervised placement. More detailed information can be found here (German version only).
- Child allowance
German child allowance is available during the voluntary social year. If there is an additional income the right to child allowance could be rejected. The income before taxes may not be more than 7.680 € (information as at February 2007; without engagement).
- Health insurance
- Participants need to be insured with health insurance and cannot be covered with family health insurance.
- Illness
- In case of illness the department needs to be informed directly. By the third day at the latest the department has to be provided with a statement of incapacity for work due to illness.
- Cancellation
- The Betheljahr contract can be cancelled ahead of time four weeks before the end of a month. An instant dismissal can be processed upon good causes.
- Minors
- Not all positions are suitable for
minors as the work contents of some positions are complex. Though there are some positions in the departments that are suitable for minors.
- Secondary employment
- Secondary employments have to be accepted. Please note that the claim for child allowance might be rejected.
- Police clearance certificate
- Before beginning of the Betheljahr a police clearance certificate needs to be sent to the Freiwilligenagentur. (agency for voluntary services)
- Mentorship
- Participants will be familiarised with the department and supported by experienced employees.
- Feedback interviews
- At least once during the Betheljahr a meeting of the participant, the mentor and where required the superior and consultants of the Freiwilligenagentur takes place.
- Work placements
- As from the third month the participants will do two week-long work placements. Where these work placements will be done mainly depends on the participant´s individual wishes and the intention to cover a wide experience of work. The planning of these work placements is masterminded by the participants.
- Seminars
- Seminars take 25 work days. They are divided into 3 parts of 5 days each. Subjects are for example welfare and healthcare, personality development, deaconry and other subjects selected by the participants.
- Holidays
- Entitlement to holidays are 26 days per 12 months.
